What is Pilot Well-being?

Mental health involves finding balance in all parts of your life, including your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

A balanced lifestyle creates a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. Pilot Well-being significantly contributes to performance and re-enforces commitments to pilot responsibilities.
When it comes to concerns such as depression, suicidal tendencies and other similar mental health struggles, a culture of stigma often prevents sufferers from coming forward, voicing their distress and seeking the necessary support. Pilot Mental Health and Well-being gives a psychological perspective on the unique working environment of airline pilots and looks at factors that may increase their risk of developing mental health conditions.

Different Issues

What affects someone's mental well-being won't necessarily affect others in the same way. We all have times when we have low mental well-being, where we feel stressed, upset or find it difficult to cope.

Relationships

Build positive relationships.
Connecting with others can help you to feel a greater sense of belonging and can help to challenge feelings of loneliness.

Self Development

Learning new skills can help boost your confidence and give you a sense of achievement. You could learn a new language, sign up for an art class or try a new recipe.

Self Esteem

Increasing your self-esteem can help you to feel more confident and able to challenge adversity.

Tips to attain good Mental Health

Steps to lead you to improved mental health, and achieve balance in various aspects of work and life.
  • Sleep Well

Prioritize sleep and aim for seven to nine hours each night. Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. Sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke

  • Mindfulness Exercises

Try mindfulness exercises such as yoga or guided meditation. Practicing meditation at home can transfer to the cockpit as the pilot learns to pair invasive thoughts with calming down. As meditation enhances the ability to stay in the moment, advocates say that meditation can even improve situational awareness

  • Peer Support

Connect with your community online. Opening up to a trusted peer can help you to feel listened to and supported. Just acknowledging your feelings by saying them out loud can help.

  • Practice self-care

Practice self-care by reflecting on the good at the end of each day
