Research, Evidence & Perspectives in Aviation
Exploring the human side of aviation through research, professional experience and current thinking on wellbeing, human performance and safety.
Because understanding the people behind aviation is part of understanding aviation itself.
FEATURED RESEARCH
Safe Skies
What do airline pilots really experience behind the uniform?
Safe Skies is an exploration of the lived experiences of airline pilots and the factors that contribute to stress, performance and emotional wellbeing.
Based on qualitative research with six experienced airline pilots, the study explores the pressures of aviation, work and family life, fatigue, wellbeing, management culture and the barriers that can make seeking support difficult.

BEYOND THE FLIGHT DECK
The human side of aviation doesn't stop at the cockpit door.
Aviation depends on people across the entire operation. Pilots, cabin crew, licensed engineers, air traffic personnel and ground operations teams all work within demanding, safety-critical environments.
PILOTS
The pressures of flight operations, responsibility, fatigue and the demands of maintaining performance.
ENGINEERS
Safety-critical technical roles where responsibility, workload and operational pressures can have a significant impact.
CABIN CREW
Working with people, managing unpredictable situations and maintaining safety in a demanding operational environment.
GROUND & AIR TRAFFIC TEAMS
The people behind the operation, working under time pressure and within highly coordinated safety-critical systems.
Peer support can provide an important first point of contact — a confidential space to talk to someone who understands the environment.
THE HUMAN FACTOR
STRESS & PERFORMANCE
How operational pressure, fatigue and personal stress can affect performance — and why resilience doesn't mean simply pushing through.
TRUST & CONFIDENTIALITY
Why aviation professionals may hesitate to seek help, and why trust is fundamental to effective peer support.
WELLBEING & SAFETY
Why the wellbeing of the people operating within a safety-critical system is itself part of the safety conversation.
